Benefits of Chiropractic for Sciatica

Chiropractic care can play a significant role in alleviating the pain associated with sciatica. By focusing on spinal alignment and overall nervous system function, chiropractors can help reduce inflammation and improve mobility. Adjustments and targeted therapies, patients often experience relief from symptoms, allowing for a better quality of life. Regular chiropractic care can also aid in preventing future flare-ups, promoting long-term wellness. Our Chiropractor, Ellie, uses a wide variety of techniques including spinal manipulation & mobilisation, dry needling, soft tissue work and exercise rehabilitation.

Symptoms of Sciatica

Sciatica refers to the pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. The symptoms of sciatica can vary, but typically include:

  1. Pain: The most common symptom is a sharp, shooting pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down the leg. It can range from mild to severe and may feel like a burning or stabbing sensation.

  2. Numbness or Tingling: Some individuals experience a feeling of numbness or a "pins and needles" sensation in the affected leg or foot.

  3. Muscle Weakness: Sciatica can lead to weakness in the leg or foot, making it difficult to move or control the affected leg.

  4. Pain that Worsens with Movement: The pain often intensifies when coughing, sneezing, or sitting for prolonged periods. It may also get worse when bending, twisting, or lifting.

  5. Unilateral Symptoms: The pain typically affects one side of the body, though it can occasionally affect both sides.

  6. Pain Radiating Down the Leg: The discomfort often starts in the lower back or buttock and radiates down the back of the thigh, calf, and sometimes into the foot.
